Synthetic Pot Ban Could Decrease Local Arrests

Kinnelon police said long-term effects of chemically-altered marijuana are still unknown.

Synthetic marijuana possession was officially banned in New Jersey on Monday. While the ban now makes it entirely illegal to possess and distribute the chemically-altered drug, which also goes by the street names "K2" and "Spice," one local law enforcement official said the permanent change may not have much of an effect on how synthetic marijuana posession is processed as a crime. Kinnelon police Lt. John Schwartz said synthetic marijuana is legally classified along with cocaine and heroin. Penalties of being caught in possession of the drug include a fine of up to $25,000 and a possible three- to five-year prison term. With the ban, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey S. KHS Student Allegedly Found With Synthetic Marijuana

Product known as Spice seized only one day prior to a national ban on the substance.

One day before a national ban was placed on the drug, Kinnelon police responded to an incident at Kinnelon High School in which a student was found with Spice, a synthetic form of marijuana. Police said they responded to a report on Thursday, Dec. 23 at 10:17 a.m., when the high school administration allegedly confiscated the drug, believed to be marijuana, and paraphernalia from a 15-year-old male student. When police arrived, Vice Principal Matthew Scanlon turned over a glass pipe with marijuana in it to Patrol Officer Melissa Huizenga, police said. The 15-year-old was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana on school property and possession of drug paraphernalia and was released to his parents, police said. The …
