Fire Damages Jiggs Corner Music Saloon

Malfunctioning refrigerator causes blaze that spreads to the outside of the building.

Butler firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at Jiggs Corner Music Saloon Monday morning, authorities said. The Butler Police Department received numerous calls at about 11 a.m. about a fire that broke out at the bar, Capt. Ciro Chimento said. Emergency personnel discovered a refrigerator unit malfunctioned and caught on fire. The flames spread to the outside of the building.  The Butler Fire Department brought the fire under control within minutes. Several neighboring businessmen battled the blaze with fire extinguishers before the fire department responded to the fire. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was being investigated Monday afternoon. Bartholdi Avenue was closed to traffic for a half hour while authorities …

Truck Crash Victim in Critical But Stable Condition

Driver charged with failure to wear a seatbelt and careless driving.

The driver of a box truck that crashed into a utility pole off of Route 23 South Wednesday night was listed in critical but stable condition at St. Joseph's Trauma Center Thursday, according to Butler Police Capt. Ciro Chimento. William Bateson, 30, of Butler, was flown to the hospital by a medevac helicopter Wednesday after emergency officials responded just after 5 p.m. He was unconscious when he was pulled from his vehicle. The helicopter took off from the Richard Butler School. Police, fire and Tri-Boro First Aid Squad volunteers responded to the scene of the crash to find the front of the truck smashed into the pole at 1395 Route 23 South, near the CKO Kickboxing Gym. Unconscious Man Airlifted After Rt. 23 Truck Crash

Police said man was in critical condition after his truck veered off roadway and into utility pole.

A male driver was unconscious when he was pulled from a smashed truck and airlifted to Morristown Medical Center following a truck crash off of Route 23 South Wednesday evening. Police were on the scene of the parking lot of 1395 Route 23, where the truck's face appeared to have collided with a pole, shortly after 5 p.m. Sgt. Mike Moeller, of the Butler Police Department, said only the single truck was involved in the crash and no passengers were in the vehicle. Shattered glass from the windshield covered the ground and crime scene was wrapped around the truck, which had a Safeway Piano Movers logo on the side. Motorcycle Crash Leaves One Injured

Police said man was thrown from motorcycle on Glenwild Avenue.

A Union man was injured in a motorcycle crash on Glenwild Avenue Saturday after he lost control of his motorcycle and drove off the roadway. No other vehicles were involved. Bloomingdale police said wet road conditions caused Tareen Nawaz, 31, to drive off the roadway around 4:30 p.m. He was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained injuries to his right shoulder and left hip. He was transported to Morristown Hospital by Tri-Boro First Aid Squad. Chilton Hospital paramedics also responded to the scene.

Part of Man's Ear Bitten Off in Bar Fight, Cops Say

Police said friends started out playing until one of them got injured at Bloomingdale bar.

A Bloomingdale man had part of his ear bitten off in a fight Wednesday that started out as just "play fighting," police said. No charges were filed against either of the two men involved, although one of the men, Matthew DeAugistinis, 25, of Bloomingdale, had to be transported to the hospital because of the ear injury. Police said the men are friends. Bloomingdale police said DeAugustinis and Michael Mccroy, 22, of Wayne, were seen rolling on the ground when they responded to a Hamburg Turnpike bar around 3:30 a.m. Ptl. Kevin Piersel separated both males and said they were allegedly intoxicated when they began play fighting. Man Allegedly Fell Asleep at Wheel, Crashed Car in Bloomingdale

Police said driver struck retaining wall on Macopin Road.

A 69-year-old Hewitt man was injured in a crash on Macopin Road on Aug. 27 where police said he allegedly fell asleep while driving. According to Bloomingdale police, the driver was headed south on upper Macopin Road around 10:45 p.m. when his car went off the roadway and struck a retaining wall. The vehicle then spun off the wall, striking a guardrail on the southbound side. The airbag deployed as a result of the crash. Police said when they responded, the man had several lacerations on his face and head and appeared to be disoriented. Tri-Boro First Aid Squad responded to the scene and transported the man to Morristown Medical Center. The man's vehicle was towed away from the scene but no summonses were issued.

First Aid Squad Seeks New Members

Probationary members train with experienced EMTs to learn about medical field.

Tri-Boro First Aid Squad is seeking new members to join the volunteer medical organization. The squad, which was established in 1939, responds to medical calls in Kinnelon, Butler, Bloomingdale. Volunteers respond to about 1,500 calls per year. Hazel Whitty, co-chairman of the squad's membership committee, said there are three kinds of members: probationary members, members and exempt members. The probationary membership is designed to help new members learn about the field by training with two experienced members of the squad. Exempt membership is granted to individuals who have been with the squad for an extended amount of time. "After so many years, [exempt members] don't have to ride anymore," Whitty said. Tri-Boro First Aid Squad was recently named a 2012 grant recipient of $1,000 from Wells Fargo bank, in Bloomingdale. Wells Fargo is proud to support organizations working to strengthen local communities and is actively involved where employees live and work. Team members are leaders in helping their communities succeed. The all-volunteer Tri-Boro First Aid Squad provides Emergency Medical Services to the Boroughs of Bloomingdale, Butler and Kinnelon 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with almost 1,500 calls a year. UPDATE: Unconscious Man, Dog Rescued From Burning Home

Bloomingdale chief said fire began in kitchen of Main Street residence.

An occupant of a Main Street home in Bloomingdale was rescued when he was found unconscious after a fire broke out at the residence Tuesday night, Bloomingdale Fire Chief Mike Hudson said. A dog was also rescued from the residential fire at 91 Main St. Officials were on the scene around 10:30 p.m. when Hudson said a fire had started in the kitchen. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Hudson said the fire was put out within 10 minutes of officials arriving on the scene. Main Street was completely closed off to motorists while officials responded. The air smelled of smoke but exterior damage to the residence was not visible.
