Students at Walter T. Bergen School are collecting food this month as part of an initiative that encourages healthy eating and more exercise. Students are collecting food as part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, a program designed to empower municipal leaders with the tools to implement active-living initiatives in their communities. The school has partnered with the Bloomingdale Health Department to run the drive. “We want to educate the children about the realities of hunger in New Jersey. Hunger exists in our own backyard,” said Christie Navea-Jaime, the Bloomingdale health educator. “That education is important because we want the children to understand why we are doing this food drive.” Students are collecting the following foods. …

Geography Bee winners and high honors recipients received gift certificates to Applebee's for their achievements.
Walter T. Bergen School Principal Frank Verducci and social studies teacher Shane DeLucca were at the Bloomingdale Public Schools Board of Education meeting Monday to honor some very accomplished students. Mac Bross, the grandson of board member Sheldon Bross, won first place in the Geography Bee earlier this year. Bross is a student in grade 8 at Bergen. Jessica Hornig, a seventh-grade student, was the first runner-up in the Bee. Both won a free meal at Applebee's for their achievements. Thirteen students named to the High Honor Roll for the second marking period were also honored at Monday's school board meeting. Students only make high honors if they finish the term with grades of 95 or higher in every subject. Those students are: High …

Several Walter T. Bergen School students achieved places on the Bloomingdale school's Honor Roll and High Honor Roll for the second tri-mester. Hundreds come out for bonnet contest, crafts.
A huge crowd came out to the Walter T. Bergen School Saturday for a visit from the Easter Bunny and an Easter egg hunt. Included in the day were crafts, a DJ and an Easter bonnet contest.

Bloomingdale Municipal Drug Alliance receives grant to bring anti-bullying presentation to the borough.
The Walter T. Bergen School will host a special anti-bullying program, "Stand Up, Step In, Stop Bullying," open to local students and their parents, on April 4 at 7 p.m The program features David Jack, an award-winning recording artist who incorporates music into his anti-bullying assemblies. The Bloomingdale Municipal Drug Alliance received a grant to bring the program, which has become a nationally-known assembly, to the borough. All students will receive two tickets to the event and students who wish to receive more can request to be put on a waiting list for additional tickets. Bloomingdale Public Schools will be offering a different kind of camp this summer as the Camp Invention INNOVATE program will begin on June 24. The nationally-known camp program will be open to children entering grades one through six. Scenes of 'Bad Parents' were taped at the Walter T. Bergen School with local extras.
Bloomingdale is making it to the big screen and the community will get a special opportunity to see a kid-friendly version of the movie filmed in the borough last year at Clearview Kinnelon 11. The film, "Bad Parents," is a comedy about a group of parents who act up from the sidelines of their kids' soccer games. The movie was directed by Bergen County resident Caytha Jentis and stars Janeane Garofalo, Cheri Oteri, Michael Boatman, Chris Titus, Bill Sage and others. Producers of the film were made aware of the scenery Bloomingdale had to offer through the Passaic County Film Commission and Bloomingdale's liaison, Lynne Ferrara. Bergen Middle School started off the new year with their annual schoolwide Scripps National Spelling Bee. Teachers Cassandra Harvey and Sophia Bianchi organized the event and served as moderators. Contestants from each grade made it to the school finals by winning a bee held in their respective language arts classrooms. In all, 27 students in grades 5 through 8 participated in the schoolwide assembly. In the end, fifth grader Julian Amadio spelled “fantastically” to edge eighth grader Camerin Caraballo and was declared spelling champion for 2013. Amadio will move on to the Bergen & Passaic …
