Walter T. Bergen School students and staff members raised $150 for Superstorm Sandy relief during the school's annual holiday concert Wednesday night. Wednesday's Walter T. Bergen School concert will not only feature holiday tunes but encourage the generosity of attendees. The school is asking that relatives and friends who come to the concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the school gym, bring unwrapped toys and gift cards to be donated to Superstorm Sandy victims and children in the Toms River area. Principal Frank Verducci said the donation drive effort is being spearheaded by the WTB National Junior Honor Society members under the direction of Maureen Jacobs and Jillian Engelhardt. Additionally, the students will be sponsoring a "Deck the Halls" competition in the school as a fundraiser to gather money to purchase candy canes for Santa's Rooftop Response, a foundation started by a …

Mayor said some kinks still need to be ironed out with new light system.
After months of controversial discussion on the topic last year, "the lights are finally lit" at the Walter T. Bergen School field, according to Bloomingdale Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy. Dunleavy said the lights came on for a test run this month and while a few residents complained of their brightness, there is still some work to be done on them. "There's some minor tinkering to be done," he said at the Nov. 27 borough council meeting. The field lighting issue was mostly split on party lines last year with Republicans not favoring the project, which cost just about $400,000, and former Councilman Bernie Vroom, a Democrat, favoring the project. Several residents whose children are active in the borough's recreation programs approached the …

Superintendent said school will become more flexible about where students sit as year goes on.
Lunch was a popular topic at this week's Bloomingdale Board of Education meeting. But it was not what students are eating as much as where students are eating that had many Walter T. Bergen School parents concerned. Teresa Federici, the parent of a seventh grader at the school, presented a petition with nearly 80 signatures from parents who disagree with the school's new policy for assigned seating in the lunchroom to the board at Tuesday night's meeting. "We're not going to back down," Federici said. "It's inappropriate." Interim Superintendent of Schools Frank Buglione said the assigned seating for seventh and eighth grade lunch periods was something new the school decided to try this year. He said he has worked at other school districts…
