ReplyThe Chatham Boro numbers keep INCREASING with outages? What the heck is that about? And shame on JCPL turning away utiltiy workers from Alabama because they weren't union. Greed in the face of this disaster is just heinous. I hope Gov. Christie puts the hammer to them.

Replywhy do we have to knock off people who had power to restore others? it's not as if it's short term--we went from having power to losing it on Wednesday with no estimate of when it will be restored. and it's effecting the businesses in town too, with essentials (e.g. CVS).

Replythere is no requirement that the school close for the teacher's convention. Some distrcits send 2 delegates from each school and get subs for their classes so that they don't have to close the schools those days. Last year, distrcits waived making up the days from the October storm as it was a state of emergency and extreme circumstances. Other districts chose to make them up. I suggest that we treat this as an extreme situation and hold school during the convention and waive the rest of the days. Randy, what do you think of additional school work for home to help make up? Kids become ill and still finish the year.
Another thought is if the schools don't open next week, stagger the days to help make up the time--the High School could use Milton in the afternoons, etc. as an example. We could also tack on an additional 30 minutes per day or something if we desperately need to make up for this, which I think in this type of situation, we can find more innovative and creative ways then taking away all holidays.

ReplyI think in times of disaster we want the assurance that our town's elected leaders are there for us. Imagine if the President was not present--leadership is required in good and bad. I for one was disappointed with the lack of updates from the Boro and instead relied on Madison and Chatham Township since there was nothing coming from the Boro.

ReplyBefore we start the repeat of last year's school scramble to make up days, let's keep in mind that other districts waived the additional make up days since this was an extreme disaster. I hope we can do the same because from a fundamental perspective, this was extreme and we can make up for it in other ways with homework, etc. I am not worried that my child won't get into college and I doubt they will ask, "how many days did you miss and not make up because of Hurricane Sandy."

ReplyI hope this year we can make up for the Halloween festivities for the little kids. Last year all the school parties and parades were cancelled and now for the second year, these kids miss the in school fun and excitement. If we can reschedule trick or treating, we can reschedule the rest. I'll take extra homework if that helps.

ReplyThe guy jet skiing, the other guy in the scuba gear and then the jogger who was struck by a tree limb tonight are all in violation of directives and cost us a fortune. I'd send them the bill for the services. All are nominees for the Darwin awards.

why are there mandatory increases when the rest of the citizens are not getting them? Inflation is high with food prices yet this doesn't deter the increases in the budget. Might it make sense to freeze salaries for a year or two to parallel the residents and be sensitive to the already great demands on our finances?
