ReplyWe were out of power for 6 days after the last storm and are about to break that record. I've seen lots of crews around town, but all were sitting in trucks or standing around chatting with each other, collecting overtime. I wish I could think these guys are heroes but I agree with those who think the First Energy crews are just prolonging their paychecks. Chatham Borough went from 1681 to 1477 -- woo hoo! 200 people restored. Time for another coffee break while kids have to sleep in a 40 degree house for another night! What heroes! It's time to oust JCP&L and their lack of disaster planning,

ReplyI agree with Betsy and R Swanson. I don't think having a day off to go skiing or shopping teaches kids anything, especially in a town like Chatham where there are few established activities to commemorate the day. Our preschool was open on MLK Day and the kids came home with stories of Dr. King and his legacy. Last year, we went to the library's program to get something out of the day, but being in school will be even more beneficial. And I could make the same argument for most similar national holidays. PS-won't it be funny when it winds up being a snow day?

ReplyAnd should the story say "Friday, Feb 17" and "Tuesday, Feb 21."? Those are the actual days off.

ReplyKatie, I don't believe the full vs. half days matter. MLK Day is a national holiday, so PC or not, that should stay intact. The proposed solution seems perfectly reasonable and preserves families' one opportunity to take a full week vacation during the year, at a time when everyone needs it - even the kids who desperately need a break before the NJ ASK testing.

ReplyAnd what happens to those of us NOT on the "priority list" who have tree limbs on the power lines and temps of 55 degrees inside the house, with no power since Saturday?

What about restoring service along the M&E line to Hoboken? I see that some lines are now running through Hoboken but M&E isn't.
